The Future Created by Panasonic Automotive Battery Plant in Kansas, USA: Contributing to Increasing EV Adoption and CO2 Reduction.

Panasonic has supplied batteries for a cumulative total of three million electric vehicles (EVs)* and is one of the leading manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries in North America.

CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions are known to have a significant impact on climate change, and the IEA estimates that approximately one-quarter of the world’s emissions are generated by transportation. The transition to EVs will reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles that run on fossil fuels. In addition to reducing emissions from Panasonic’s own operations, this “reduction contribution” also advances Panasonic’s commitment to fight climate change. The automotive battery business is the flagship of the Panasonic Group’s efforts to confront climate change issues.

Allan Swan, CEO of Panasonic Energy of North America, oversees Panasonic’s operation at the Gigafactory in Nevada, and he is leading the construction of a brand new facility for Panasonic Energy—the world’s largest automotive battery plant—in Kansas. We spoke with him about the role of the Panasonic Group’s battery business.

Automotive Battery Business Making a Major Contribution to Solving Climate Change Issues

What role will Panasonic Energy’s Kansas plant play?

Construction on the cutting-edge, state-of-the-art automotive battery plant in De Soto, Kansas, began in November 2022, and we are targeting start of production in 2025. The plant will increase our production of the 2170 cylindrical lithium-ion battery for electric vehicles, which is in high demand from automotive manufacturers.

Panasonic Group has more than a century of experience making batteries. Our automotive batteries for EVs, which boast high safety, high capacity, and high energy density, have been achieved through technological expertise that we have cultivated over the company’s long history. I am pleased to have a base of operations in Kansas to complement the one in Nevada. With these two plants, we hope to accelerate the spread of EVs and make a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.

Why are you building such a large-scale automotive battery plant in North America?

In North America, the shift to EVs is expected to accelerate against the backdrop of stricter environmental regulations and consumer demand for high-performing, fun-to-drive electric vehicles. In addition, high demand for long-distance travel in the U.S. makes this the market where we can best utilize our high-capacity technology, one of our strengths. If trucks, trains, and buses are included, this is a very large market for automotive batteries.

Many customers who want to use our technology are based in North America, so it makes sense to manufacture EV batteries here. The EV market is also starting to evolve. Our technology for cylindrical lithium-ion batteries is becoming increasingly important. We are in a great situation where our technology matches the needs of the market.

In addition, North America offers “local sourcing” of raw materials mined and processed in a responsible manner, often using renewable energy and other sustainability best practices. As a pioneer in this market, we are making a rapid succession of bold investments to strengthen our position in North America as the leading company driving the adoption of EVs.

By centralizing material procurement and production in North America, where many of our customers are located, we will be able to drastically reduce our supply chain emissions. As fossil fuel-powered vehicles are replaced by EVs, CO2 emissions from vehicles currently on the road can be avoided, as well.

The automotive battery business plays an important role in contributing to solving climate change issues, which we believe must be addressed for the sake of our children, grandchildren, and future generations.

As a Pioneer in the Fight Against Climate Change, We Will Reduce Production-Related CO2 Emissions

What about the environmental impact of battery production?

The production of automotive batteries also involves CO2 emissions, and nearly 90% of these emissions occur during resource extraction, raw material processing, and material logistics—all processes that take place prior to manufacturing. This is why we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of every process, from material procurement to production of batteries to recycling.

Our Kansas plant is designed to operate as a Panasonic-designated net-zero facility. We will minimize the amount of electricity needed for production, and all aspects—from wiring to machinery and equipment—will support CO2 emissions reduction. We also plan to transition to 100% local renewable energy sourcing within the next ten years. Everything about the plant is completely different from anything we have done before.

In terms of raw materials, we are working to procure locally, use materials with lower CFP3, and use more recycled materials. We are actively pursuing new alliances with suppliers that will help us reduce our CFP.

Our efforts today will have an impact on your tomorrow. That’s why everything we do today must be accompanied by solutions for CO2 emissions reduction and climate change issues.

As a producer of automotive batteries for EVs, Panasonic has a responsibility to be a pioneer in the fight against climate change—not only at our own factories, but also in cooperation with our suppliers, to reduce CO2 emissions throughout our supply chain.

3 Carbon Footprint of Products: A number indicating the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the entire lifecycle of a product, from raw material procurement to disposal and recycling.

What specific efforts are you making to reduce environmental impact across your supply chain?

Our partnership with Redwood Materials, a U.S. battery recycling company, began in 2019, and together we are recycling waste materials from our Nevada plant. We also signed a purchase agreement for recycled cathode materials and copper foil for EV lithium-ion batteries.

This is a really exciting collaboration and a great example of a supplier operating a plant with carbon emissions in mind. Redwood plans to make completely new materials from recycled batteries, and we will use these materials to produce batteries. Using recycled inputs, increasing local procurement, and promoting recycling-oriented manufacturing will allow us to reduce CO2 emissions during the resource extraction and distribution processes.

In 2023, we signed a purchase agreement with U.S.-based Sila Nanotechnologies for silicon anode materials. In 2024, we will sign a graphite supply agreement with Novonix to supply artificial graphite, the main anode material for EV batteries, from its plant in Tennessee. Novonix’s new technology reduces CO2 emissions during the production of synthetic graphite, helping to accelerate CFP reduction during material production.

In addition, we have signed a graphite supply agreement with Nouveau Monde Graphite, a graphite producer from Canada, where a high percentage of electricity is derived from renewable energy sources, allowing us to procure anode materials with significantly reduced CO2 emissions. By procuring Canadian materials for our U.S. plants, we can shorten the supply chain, significantly reducing distribution-related CO2 emissions.

We are very fortunate to have managed to find suppliers that have the technological know-how to make what we want and help us reduce our CFP. They are like-minded companies that are sincerely facing the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions.

In this way, Panasonic will lead the growth of the battery industry and accelerate our efforts to achieve net-zero emissions4 through diverse partnerships.

The Panasonic GREEN IMPACT Commitment

How do you see the operations of the Kansas plant and the Panasonic Group’s automotive battery business impacting the future of our planet?

Through Panasonic GREEN IMPACT, the Panasonic Group has committed to contributing to the reduction of 93 million tons of CO2 emissions by early 2031. The activities of our Kansas plant and the widespread use of EV batteries will contribute to this goal. It is a big challenge, and we at Panasonic have a responsibility to work toward this goal.

What I find very exciting about working at Panasonic is the sense that we are taking on the challenge of combating global environmental issues like climate change through our initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions. This is true not only for me but for all Group employees: we’re all committed to making products that help in that fight.

Global environmental issues are not just about my generation. We must leave a safe planet for our children, their children, and their children’s children, so that they can continue to enjoy a prosperous life. We must ensure that people can enjoy a happy life on earth for centuries to come. Our current fight to solve the climate change problem will help ensure this.

Our efforts today will have a great impact in mitigating the worst effects of climate change.

Eaton – Innovative Safety Solutions Help Accelerate Battery Electrified Vehicle Transition.

Intelligent power management company Eaton today announced its comprehensive suite of safety-focused electrified vehicle (EV) technologies will be on display June 18-20 in Hall 10-A36 at The Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart, Germany.

Mark Schneider, president, Eaton’s eMobility business, said:

While EV adoption continues to increase, we are helping our global customers meet the growing demand with innovative new technologies.

“Safety is always a priority, whether the vehicle is powered by gasoline or electricity, and our EV solutions ensure occupants and the vehicle itself remain secure.”

Breaktor a pioneering high-voltage EV protection device

Eaton’s Breaktor® circuit protection technology combines the function of fuses, pyro switches, and contactors into a single coordinated and resettable device. As electric vehicle power levels increase, Breaktor solves the ever-increasing coordination challenge between fuses and contactors and offers extremely fast, safe and reliable protection for high-power battery and inverter systems.

3-in-1 battery vent valve improves battery pack leak testing

Eaton’s 3-in-1 battery vent valve is the first-to-market solution that is capable of three unique functions. In addition to passive and active venting, to provide overpressure relief for the vehicle’s battery pack, it includes an industry first battery-case leak-check mechanism.

It can open up during testing, allowing battery makers to completely leak-check the fully assembled battery pack with the valve in place. This provides customers with the peace of mind that all sealing surfaces of the battery pack are fully tested against water ingress. This Eaton-developed technology improves the safety of vehicles during normal operation and in the event of flooding situations.

The vent valve is precisely and flexibly designed to meet specific opening pressures and optimize venting. Its spring-based actuation technology allows Eaton to accommodate different opening pressure requirements with the same valve design to drive economies of scale.

Fuel tank isolation valve releases pressure in hybrid-electric vehicles

Eaton’s next-generation fuel tank isolation valve (FTIV) releases pressure in the gas tank of a hybrid-electric vehicle since the gas engine in a hybrid vehicle does not operate continuously. Pressure has to be released when the vehicle is in electric mode, and when refueling it’s important the tank is depressurized to avoid spit back.

High Power Lock Box terminals provide protection against the elements

Eaton’s High Power Lock Box (HPLB) terminals, which serve as the interface to a conductor and create a point where external circuits can be connected, are ideal for current and future EV solutions. They have numerous benefits over competitive solutions, including a space-saving profile, superior performance, cost savings, and reduced manufacturing complexity. They also provide efficiency, reliability and protection against the elements.

Eaton Bussmann series fuses optimized for high-powered electrified vehicles

Eaton Bussmann® series fuses feature ratings of up to 1,000 volts of direct current (VDC) and up to 600 amps, enabling them to meet the requirements for use in high-powered EVs.

Eaton’s hybrid and EV fuses are designed to manage and protect the charging systems of electric commercial, passenger and high-performance vehicles such as sports cars and large sport-utility vehicles.

Accelerate Battery EV adoption: Versinetic’s urgent appeal to the next UK government.

As the UK approaches the general election, Versinetic’s EV charging engineers are urging the next government to accelerate the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and therefore reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and achieve energy sustainability. Versinetic engineers, who have been at the heart of EV infrastructure design and development since the London Olympics, advocate for the next government to focus on key areas of infrastructure and accessibility, economic incentives, and clean energy commitment and research investment:

1. Expand street-level charging stations nationwide

Infrastructure and accessibility are also paramount. Versinetic engineers want increased street-level charging in residential areas, which is crucial for urban dwellers without private parking spaces. Regulating the prices of electricity at public charging points is another critical step to ensure affordability and prevent exploitation. Previous subsidies and tax breaks, such as the Plug-in Car Grant and exemptions from the Vehicle Excise Duty, have shown the effectiveness of financial incentives in promoting EV adoption.

Infrastructure grants for apartment blocks, such as the Electric Vehicle-Ready Buildings scheme in New South Wales, Australia, should also be prioritised by the new UK administration.

The engineers argue that these measures would make EVs more practical and appealing to a larger segment of the population.

2. Break down economic barriers to EV ownership

Economic incentives play a crucial role in reducing the barriers to EV adoption. The engineers suggest that lowering the cost of entry for purchasing EVs through initiatives similar to the first-time home buyer’s scheme would significantly boost uptake. Addressing the price differential between EVs and fossil fuel vehicles, such as the significant price gap between petrol and electric Peugeot 208 models, is also essential. Additionally, offering support for buying second-hand EVs, possibly through salary sacrifice schemes similar to the Cycle to Work scheme, would allow more individuals to own cars instead of renting. By making EVs more financially accessible, the new government can drive a significant increase in their adoption rates.

3. Commit to clean energy and boost research investment

Finally, a commitment to clean energy and increased research investment is essential for supporting the EV ecosystem. The engineers recommend national campaigns to inform the public about the advantages of EVs, including their environmental impact and long-term cost savings. They call for substantial government investment in renewable energy sources to ensure the electricity powering EVs is as green as the vehicles themselves. Investment in research and development to drive innovation in battery technology, charging infrastructure, and load balancing solutions is also crucial. Increasing commitment to generating clean energy at the grid level will ensure EVs are truly environmentally friendly. Additionally, investing in battery technology research will improve performance, reduce costs, and enhance the overall viability of EVs. This comprehensive approach will support the EV market and contribute to broader environmental goals and energy sustainability.

These recommendations from Versinetic engineers underscore the urgent need for the next UK government to take decisive action in these areas. By focusing on, improving infrastructure, providing economic incentives, and enhancing clean energy commitment and research investment, the government can create an environment that fosters the rapid and widespread adoption of electric vehicles. The upcoming election presents a pivotal opportunity for policymakers to commit to these necessary changes, ensuring that the UK leads the way in sustainable transportation.

China to invest $845 million on ramping up its advanced EV battery ambitions.

China plans to invest around 6 billion yuan ($845 million) to develop next-generation battery technology powering electrical vehicles (EVs), even as its industrial policy has sparked overcapacity concerns and become a key target of US and European complaints.

A total of six companies — including CATL, the world’s biggest battery manufacturer, and major automakers like BYD and Geely — are eligible for government support to develop all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), the official China Daily newspaper reported Wednesday, citing unnamed industrial sources.

The “unprecedented” project will be led by the relevant government ministries and commissions, it said, without giving details.

ASSBs are a new technology that improves on traditional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using a solid, conductive electrolyte instead of liquid or gel-form material. They are less likely to catch fire or explode than conventional batteries and have higher energy density, so they are believed to be safer and more powerful.

However, the powerful batteries are not widely available at the moment due to their high cost and difficulty in being mass produced.

The news of Beijing’s intended investment comes at a fraught time for China’s trade relations with the West.

Earlier this month, the Biden administration imposed major new tariffs on Chinese EVs, advanced batteries and other goods. American officials say they want to protect US jobs and businesses from problems posed by the overproduction of certain products in the world’s second largest economy.

The European Commission is set to announce early next month its own decision on Chinese EV tariffs, which could spell trouble for Chinese EV makers that export hundreds of thousands of cars to Europe every year.

But Beijing is still ramping up efforts to accelerate EV production as it tries to counter a property-induced economic slowdown and promote a low-carbon economy.

Global automakers and tech companies are also working on ASSBs.

In January, Toyota (TM) said it would launch vehicles with solid-state batteries in a few years, according to Reuters. Samsung SDI said in March that it would begin mass producing solid-state batteries in 2027. Volkswagen has also been trying to develop the batteries with US startup Quantum Scape.

Chinese rivals are also upping the ante. GAC Group, a state-owned automaker based in Guangzhou, said in November that it had achieved a breakthrough in solid-state batteries and would roll out vehicles with them in 2026.

AAA finds drivers now prefer hybrids over Battery EVs.

A recent AAA survey found 63% of consumers would be “unlikely” or “very unlikely” to purchase an EV the next time they buy a vehicle.

Eighteen percent of U.S. adults who responded to the survey said they would be “very likely” or “likely” to buy a new or used EV, excluding hybrids, down from 23% last year.

One in three adults (31%) said they would be “very likely” or “likely” to buy a hybrid, according to AAA.

Greg Brannon, director of automotive research at AAA, in a release, said:

Early adopters who wanted an EV already have one.

“The remaining group of people who have yet to adopt EVs consider the practicality, cost, convenience, and ownership experience, and for some, those are big enough hurdles to keep them from making the jump to fully electric.”

AAA found the top hesitations in purchasing an EV continue to be cost, lack of convenient charging options, and range anxiety:

Three in ten also cited the inability to install a charging station where they live.

Accessible, reliable, affordable, and convenient charging is key to growing EV interest and adoption, according to AAA, including at-home charging which isn’t likely possible for those who live in an apartment or condo.

However, AAA found an EV might be a great choice for households with two or more cars; although, that might not be a good fit for those who rely on their cars for everyday use and travel.

The release said:

AAA believes there may be a near-term ceiling related to consumer adoption of battery electric vehicles due to their costs, charging accessibility, and range anxiety.

“However, hybrid options could bridge these gaps, broadening consumer interest in owning an EV.”

Access to a hybrid vehicle lessens the anxiety for consumers because it allows people to enjoy the benefits of electrification without feeling like they are disrupting their current lifestyle or travel plans, i.e. longer distance driving, less charging options, et cetera, AAA said.

Brannon said:

Deciding to make the leap to full electric may feel overwhelming for many consumers, and a hybrid option may be the way to bridge this gap.

“Consumer demand will ultimately dictate the future, and my prediction is that we will have a mix of EVs, hybrids, and internal combustion vehicles in dealerships and on the roads in the U.S. for many decades ahead.”

The survey was conducted April 4-8 using a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the overall U.S. household population. A total of 1,152 interviews were completed by adults 18 years or older.

Mitchell International’s Q1 2024 report on EV trends, released Tuesday, states decreased purchase prices caused weakened consumer confidence in the financial viability of used EVs. Prices fell by more than 30% year-over-year compared to a 3.6% decline for used internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, according to the report.

Mitchell also found that range anxiety continues to be a barrier to EV adoption but the rising cost of fuel and availability of charging ports (22% in the U.S. and 30% in the U.S. last year) could spur an increase in purchases especially as “exorbitant EV premiums are seemingly a thing of the past.”

According to E&E News by Politico, three Republican U.S. Congress members who own car dealerships have been pushing policies, holding hearings, and joining legislation “to thwart the president’s drive to electrify the nation’s auto sector.”

“The EV market is phony. It’s not real,” Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), a car dealer who chairs the House Small Business Committee, recently told E&E News.

Williams added the EV market is being artificially propped up by government policies like tax credits for vehicles and grants for charging stations, according to the article. He told E&E he doesn’t sell EVs at his dealership.

Williams said:

It’s a woke market that the Big Three bought into under Obama.

“They got themselves into a heck of a bind right now because nobody’s buying them. Nobody’s going to buy them.”

Williams and Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pennsylvania), another dealership owner, have joined dozens of colleagues to cosponsor a Congressional Review Act resolution to overturn the Biden Administration’s tailpipe emissions rule, according to E&E. The rule would require half of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030. The act is led by Rep. John James (R-Michigan) and Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska).

CliPHvent Vent Valves from Parker Prädifa Increase Battery Safety of Electric Vehicles.

The Prädifa Technology Division of Parker Hannifin, the worldwide leader in the field of motion and control technology, has introduced CliPHvent, a new generation of vent valves for EV battery housings. In the event of pressure differences between the interior of a housing and the environment, as well as when sudden overpressure occurs inside a housing, CliPHvent ensures controlled pressure compensation or fast venting. This is particularly important in case of a thermal event in the traction batteries of electric vehicles.

Protection Against Sudden Pressure Increase Caused by Overheating

A “thermal event” or “thermal runaway” describes the sudden and rapid heating of a single or several battery cells due to a defect such as mechanical damage, an electrical short circuit, or overload. Especially in the powerful batteries supplying the propulsion energy in electric vehicles, thermal runaway causes huge amounts of gas to form inside the housing which leads to an uncontrolled and rapid rise in pressure and may have serious consequences up to and including the complete destruction of the traction battery and even the whole vehicle. CliPHvent vent valves from Parker Prädifa have been specifically developed to prevent that. By enabling fast venting via the integrated seal, they protect the battery housing resulting in higher safety of the traction battery. In the case of thermal runaway in a single battery cell, a domino effect, i.e., the spreading to adjacent cells followed by rapid propagation across the entire traction battery and its complete destruction, can be prevented.

Compensation of Minor Pressure Differences, Protection Against Ambient Influences, Easy Installation
Minor pressure differences between the interior of the housing and the environment due to air pressure or temperature changes are compensated via a membrane. In addition, Parker aspire® membranes are water- and oil-repellent. As a result, CliPHvent vent valves provide reliable protection against ingress of external liquids and dirt.

The special, compact design of CliPHvent vent valves enables easy snap installation without the use of tools, on the battery housing or inside a bore.

Marelli obtains global contract from a major carmaker to supply battery thermal solutions for electric vehicles.

Marelli has been awarded a significant contract from a major global carmaker to supply the Battery Thermal Plate (BTP) for future Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). The solution, a key technology for thermal energy management in electric vehicles, has been developed and will be produced in-house by Marelli.

The supply will begin in 2024, reaching approximately 5 million units over the contract period. The agreement involves various vehicle platforms and segments for the Chinese, North American and European markets.

Shuji Kobayashi, President of Marelli’s Green Technology Solutions business, said:

We are proud of this important assignment, which further strengthens our collaboration with global carmakers on technologies that are key to optimizing thermal energy management of vehicles.

“Through our solid experience and comprehensive portfolio, we support OEMs in achieving the most efficient solutions for electric, hybrid and internal combustion engine vehicles, adapting to their specific needs to co-create with our customers their vehicles of tomorrow.”

Effective thermal management of the battery is essential to ensure performance and efficiency in fully electric vehicles, where the battery is the only energy source available. Thermal management impacts battery life, vehicle driving range, propulsion system performance and fast charging capability, and is key to maintaining a comfortable cabin environment. To reach maximum efficiency, the battery must always remain within a specific optimal temperature range under all external temperature conditions (hot/cold), while meeting the needs of the cabin and propulsion systems.

To achieve this, Marelli’s Battery Thermal Plate uses the ‘Dot Dimples’ design, which guarantees an optimized heat exchange. Thanks to specific paths of the thermal flows, this solution stabilizes the temperature of the battery cells and provides excellent temperature uniformity.

It also allows for an extremely flat product that requires limited space, ensuring an easy integration and assembly within the vehicle. The production technologies and materials used for this solution guarantee high durability and quality.

Furthermore, Marelli’s in-house testing laboratories and simulation capabilities allow to quickly adapt the dimple design technology to the needs of each customer, for different types of batteries and geometries. The all-new, all-electric 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S will launch first in the U.S. and Canada in the fall of 2024 and later be available in markets around the world.

The Jeep Wagoneer S is offered exclusively as a BEV with a range of more than 300 miles on a single charge, delivering 600 horsepower, lightning-quick 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.4 seconds and 617 lb.-ft of instant torque. Impressive performance credentials paired with the Jeep brand-exclusive Selec-Terrain traction management system, Jeep Wagoneer S instills driving confidence and traction for all weather and road conditions.

Antonio Filosa, Jeep brand CEO, said:

The launch of the all-electric Jeep Wagoneer S marks a new chapter in the storied history of the Jeep brand.

“Building upon nearly a century of innovation and design, this first global EV will introduce a whole new generation of owners to an experience that is distinctly Jeep and 100% electric in every way. With new energy in the Jeep vehicle lineup, ranging from EV to V-8, customers have never had more freedom to choose their own adventure.”

Available in Jeep brand EV-certified dealerships starting in the second half of 2024, the Wagoneer S Launch Edition has a starting U.S. MSRP of $71,995 (including destination) and qualifies for the Inflation Reduction Act Retail and Lease EV credits.

Charge your way: Effortless charging solutions
To make charging of this first global Jeep brand BEV quick and easy for customers, the Jeep Wagoneer S carries an efficient 400-volt, 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack that allows owners to charge the vehicle from 20-80% in 23 minutes (with DC fast charger).

Every Jeep Wagoneer S Launch Edition includes a 48-amp Level 2 home charger or public charging credits through Free2move Charge, Stellantis’ 360-degree charging ecosystem, making it easy for customers to always be charged by delivering seamless charging and energy management. Wagoneer S customers can access the Free2move Charge app to conveniently search for charging stations, activate the charging session and keep track of charging history.

Electrified architecture delivers outstanding performance, 4xe capability, and comfort
The foundation for the segment-leading characteristics of the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S is the highly flexible, BEV-native STLA Large platform. Jeep brand designers and engineers flexed the STLA Large platform to adjust the length, width, suspension and powertrain configurations to tailor it specifically for the Jeep Wagoneer S to deliver instant torque and lightning-quick acceleration.

Standard, all-electric, four-wheel drive delivers composed driving dynamics both on-road and in a variety of road conditions. Stellantis-designed electric drive modules (EDMs) independently power the front and rear wheels for instant torque response, while the Jeep brand-exclusive Selec-Terrain traction management system features five distinct driving modes: Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, Sand.

The Jeep Wagoneer S’s 3-in-1 EDMs combine the electric motor, gearing and power electronics into a single, compact unit that is both powerful and efficient. The front EDM is equipped with wheel disconnects to reduce energy draw when cruising and to help optimize range.

The use of new technologies and techniques played a crucial role in the overall development of the Jeep Wagoneer S. To improve the driving experience and reduce the overall noise and vibration levels to create a quiet interior cabin and a smooth ride, the Jeep engineering team improved body torsion stiffness by 35% over previous midsize-segment Jeep brand SUVs for superior ride, handling and effective response to driver input.

Premium exterior design sets new standard for all-electric Jeep Wagoneer S
A vehicle forged from premium heritage, innovation and refinement, the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S is set to blaze its own path with its elevated style, sleek sophistication and unwavering confidence. The SUV’s exterior design is an intelligent combination of harmonious proportions, modern 4xe capability and aerodynamic efficiency that reimagines the Jeep brand’s functional side for today’s electrification era.

The front fascia is artfully punctuated by a reimagined, seven-slot grille, transforming the functionality of breathing to seeing. No longer needed to allow airflow and cooling, the enclosed grille now illuminates the line-of-sight when approaching the vehicle. New striking ambient cast-lighting is inspired by modern architecture and delivers a distinguishable appearance even miles down the road.

Aerodynamic surfacing is pronounced through the precise slope and curvature of the hood and windshield, both angled for optimal performance and efficiency at high speeds. A sloping roofline cascades beneath a cantilevered rear spoiler, bridging function and aesthetics with its signature Wagoneer silhouette.

Debuting first for the 2024 model year, the Jeep Wagoneer S Launch Edition will be exclusively outfitted with elegant dark accent cues. Delivering style and customization straight from the factory, the Launch Edition features 20-inch Gloss Black wheels, as well as Gloss Black and dark neutral gray exterior elements throughout. Noticeably absent is the use of chrome, as the design team looked to incorporate more environmentally friendly processes and materials. Satin-painted accent trim and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof for an open-air experience round out the exterior appearance details.

Holistically efficient design approach
When it comes to an all-electric vehicle, aerodynamics is a crucial component to the overall design equation. Jeep brand designers and engineers set aggressive goals to reach optimal aerodynamic performance for maximum efficiency, range and performance while maintaining its sleek, premium appearance. By utilizing state-of-the-art tools and a rigorous testing and development process, including state-of-the-art wind tunnels, the team achieved a coefficient of drag (CD) of 0.29, which is the lowest CD ever for a Jeep vehicle and approximately 15% better than the average SUV.

Structurally, the roof and rear liftgate spoiler are angled to minimize wake size. The vehicle’s flush pocket door handles, rear wing and integrated fins help guide air flow around the vehicle and control the separation point at the rear. Additionally, an integrated system of underbody shields, three-dimensional shaped front tire spats and unique side-sill design all direct airflow smoothly around the tires and to the rear of the vehicle for minimum drag. All of which contribute to the Wagoneer S being the most aerodynamic Jeep brand SUV ever.

The art of interior design: A seamless integration between luxury and technology
As the pioneers and creators of the industry’s first modern luxury SUV, the iconic 1963 Jeep Wagoneer was a cut above the competition, breaking new ground and ushering in the widespread adoption of utility vehicles. Six decades later, the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S continues to push boundaries and evolve the iconic Jeep brand with a new embrace of technology, luxury and innovation.

The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S builds upon the Jeep brand’s legacy of world-class interiors that exemplify the art of travel. It’s tech-integrated interior is equally impressive as its performance numbers, with a best-in-class usable screen space of more than 45 inches, segment-exclusive interactive front passenger screen, artisan details and elegant appointments.

Building upon current-generation Jeep Grand Wagoneer design cues, the sleek, linear cockpit is fully digital with modern controls and interfaces. The focal point of the front cabin is a cross-car wing sculpture with a visually continuous display that spans the entire width of the front instrument panel with wine red accent stitching and chiseled metal decorative trim. The architecturally impactful, integrated 12.3-inch center display is framed by a rich mix of materials, including a refined cross-metal deco trim applique with a glazed laced pattern.

There are several new details throughout the interior, including a performance-inspired, wine red-stitched steering wheel with a flat-bottom design and twin spoke. The steering wheel introduces a new Cabo vinyl anti-microbial surface coating, making it easier to keep the vehicle clean.

The electronic door releases, which are new for the Jeep brand, can be activated with ease by the light touch of a thumb. A newly relocated start button is surrounded by a die-cast zinc metal marked with a fine, navigational haptic textured pattern.

The Launch Edition comes standard with a full suite of customizable LED lighting with daytime/nighttime settings, plus active, direct ambient lighting with up to 64 selectable colors. The spacious, five-passenger Jeep Wagoneer S is the only BEV in its segment to have standard heated and exclusive standard ventilated rear seats.

Segment-exclusive McIntosh sound system
Audiophiles looking for a premium, immersive sound system need look no further than the new Jeep Wagoneer S. Thanks to a segment-exclusive partnership with McIntosh, signature audio performance is delivered through a custom-tuned, 19-speaker system. Powered by a 1,200-watt amplifier and 12-inch subwoofer for outstanding bass quality, the high-performance system delivers an immersive experience, making all vehicle occupants feel like they’re in the recording studio with their favorite artists.

Purposeful design equation
The front cockpit of the Jeep Wagoneer S is adorned with several new details, including a new black ceramic-coated aluminum with haptic applique that appears on many of the vehicle’s touch points. Featured prominently on the driver control center, the exclusive navigational tactile pattern is cool to the touch and has a porcelain-like feel. Soft-wrapped doors are accentuated with decorative trim, including chiseled cross-metal accents to match the front instrument panel.

The use of recycled resources and materials were consciously integrated into the Jeep Wagoneer S. The seating, console, doors and instrument panel surfaces feature a non-leather synthetic material. Additional appointments include a premium microfiber suede headliner and premium carpets comprised of recycled pre- and post-consumer materials.

Safer, smarter technology delivers immersive driving experience
Leading the way in its class among all EVs, the all-new 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S features more than 45 inches of high-definition sculpted screen space, including a segment-exclusive 10.25-inch front interactive passenger display that talks directly to the Uconnect 5 system, allowing the front passenger to provide the driver with directions with a quick touch of the screen.

The Jeep Wagoneer S driver will experience elevated driving and seamless connectivity through an all-new standard 12.3-inch driver cluster designed to be intuitive and visually impactful based on customer feedback. Working with the standard integrated navigation system, new dynamic road views better assist the driver and augment the vehicle’s standard autonomous driving system. It also features a refined set of menus, including BEV-specific elements, such as charge level, battery health and available power. When parked and plugged in, the Jeep Wagoneer S cluster will display the current charging status, which is activated when the remote key is sensed.

The standard 12.3-inch center display houses the award-winning Uconnect 5 system, offering new levels of clarity. The screen is more responsive and provides better visibility than previous generations, specifically related to readability of maps, cameras and widgets. An expansive range of saturated color and backlighting also allow better projection of system apps.

The Jeep Wagoneer S also includes Jeep Connect services as part of the Jeep app, which helps owners understand and access details, such as the vehicle’s available remaining charge. For instance, with the Dynamic Range Mapping feature, once a destination is entered into the navigation, software algorithms calculate and visually display the range that can be traveled based on the vehicle’s state of charge.

Safety, security, and premium owner benefits = driving confidence
The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S delivers a combination of more than 170 standard safety and security features that help make instrumentation easier to see and aid in collision avoidance with advanced driver-assist technology. Features on the Launch Edition include Active Driving Assist, Intersection Collision Assist, Drowsy Driver Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition and Surround View camera.

With a flexible architecture and open software-defined platform, the Jeep Wagoneer S can receive innovative features and services, including additional automated driving, performance and other technologies via over-the-air (OTA) updates. With OTA updates, the vehicle will continue to evolve.

Jeep Wagoneer S customers are automatically enrolled in Jeep Wave, a premium loyalty program filled with benefits and perks, including worry-free maintenance at no additional cost and dedicated 24/7 support. Jeep Wagoneer S customers can enroll for three years of Jeep Connect services as part of the Assistance and Navigation package. Participants also have access to the Safety and Security package for up to 10 years of vehicle ownership.

Porsche questions plans for a battery factory in Brandenburg – Elektroauto.

More than 200 battery factories are expected to be built worldwide in the next ten years , a majority of them in Asia. Porsche also had similar plans for Brandenburg . The plan was to build a battery factory in Schwarzheide in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district . Only about 100 kilometers from Leipzig, where the manufacturer produces the all-electric Macan , and near a BASF factory for cathode material. But now it appears that the plans are stalling.

Tagesspiegel Background reports that Porsche’s supervisory board has doubts as to whether a gigafactory for battery cells is necessary. Problems in the largest car market, China, and weak demand for electric cars in Germany are causing the company’s strategists to hesitate. There now appears to be overcapacity on the global market, which could lead to plans for Porsche’s battery factory in Brandenburg being halted.

About three years ago, Porsche founded the battery subsidiary Cellforce. This is currently building a pilot plant near Reutlingen with a production capacity of up to 1.3 gigawatt hours. An expansion in Schwarzheide was planned. The planned factory will be able to produce high-performance batteries with a capacity of up to 20 gigawatt hours, enough to produce 150,000 to 200,000 electric cars annually. The investment amount amounts to several billion euros.

But these plans could now be stopped, which would be a major setback for Brandenburg as the entire environment for local battery production would be weakened. At the beginning of the week, the cancellation of SVolt’s battery factory plans weakened the cluster .  Porsche had originally hoped to become more independent and reduce costs in the long term through its own battery production . But developments in recent years have shown that reality is more complex. The market for battery cells is no longer as tense as it once was; overcapacity is now more of an issue.

The next few months will be crucial. Porsche will closely monitor market developments and adapt its strategy accordingly. Other automakers are also facing similar challenges and may need to rethink their plans. To be fair, it must be noted that several billion saved can definitely be used more sensibly elsewhere if the supply of battery cells from suppliers can be guaranteed.
